Air Pollution project

I did most 3D modeling staff in our team; this is my main work in our team and also helps my group to solve the issues and others. At begin, I try to use Google SketchUp to make the 3D lung because I have many years experience in this software. Alan also wants to help me, he made an original tube in Sketchup. And then I discovered that it is hard to use this software to 3D print and if I make the lung in Sketchup, the lung will be not perfect. As we know, Google SketchUp is great to make the building and do the construction, so I decided to use Rhinoceros, which is the quite popular 3D model software in the world. I have ever use Rhino before, but I have the basic of 3D modeling. For example, I knew how to use four views screen that is better than people never learn.  I spent one week to familiar with this software, and I saw some tutorial video on Youtube, there is some good video for the beginner (RHINO TUTORIALS). However, I only can If we want to print ideal lung, this is not suitable, and real lung is every side different. I have to overcome this issue which I need to improve the model and my skill. I spent a lot of time to find some useful video which can teach me the specific way to solve the problem. Fortunately, I found a video, which made by Wang (2014, November 2). It is not the best tutorial, but it is suitable for my situation, and it teaches me the exactly to do the model. This time I made a perfect lung and every view is similar to the real lung.

not real lung

Our purpose is that to make a third dimension and unique project to improve human awareness of the dangers of air pollution. The air pollution is the significant issue in particular countries, which also is a big challenge to solve this problem in the world. In fact, if the public and government focus this issue it might reduce a lot. For those reasons, we decide to produce something to educate people. According to our research the air pollution harm to our lung and affect our health. Therefore, we thought how to make the public to pay attention to air pollution. Initially, We thought to make a video to educate people, but there were many examples on the Internet, and it might drive people annoying. We considered an ideal concept, which makes people to be attracted our work and direct-view. Then we decide to use 3D model and into LEDs to present our work because 3D is more intuitive than 2D. It is easy to make people understand our design and affect people's motivation. The LEDs will imitate human breath that gives people some sense of substitution. We want to audience imagine that this is their lung. Also, we try to make smoke and smoke sensor to lead our work interaction, but there is the particular issue such as we have no more time, no enough budget and the university build has smoke sensors, so we decided to cancel this idea. Besides, We added two buttons to connect the wires that each button can control half lung of LEDs as our team devised that it is better to make the design interactive. We need to add LEDs inside of the lung, so we have to separate the lung and print part of a lung. It made few issues in our model mainly connection. We also spent a lot of time to make the 3D model because we did fail prototype, which is no connection part and wrong size, so we have no enough experience to make the final one. Also, many people were waiting for 3D printing in 3D Lab, and it probably spends one more week to print. At begin, the locks which look like teeth and it helps our model to connect each part together. However, the teeth do not match the gap; I think because in the software there is the exactly same size and when 3D printing machine print out the teeth, there are tiny different about teeth and gap. Then we try to use the sandpaper to make the teeth smaller, but the material of 3D printing is empty inside, and we broke the teeth. We decided to reprint our part of the model, which was broken. However, if we reproduce the whole model, it will cost a lot of money and time. Someone advised us to use the magnet to link the each part of the lung; then we drew some holes and put some magnets into the holes, but it not works, which are not strong enough to connect each part. Finally, the 3d lab stuff gives the suggestion for us that only print piece of the lung include teeth. It can reduce the time, and we do not need to pay. Then I glued it to the lung and sprayed the whole lung again. Fortunately, it looks perfect and quite useful. In final analyze, our project is direct-view and meaningful but the purpose of our project is not integrated, and our solution is not direct to solve this problem. Also, the weak point of our project is not enough interactive because we fail some staffs and no enough budget and time. The whole processing we have gained how to solve the problem, and sometimes we try many times for the solution because not all the solution is appropriate. In addition, we have learnt using Rhinoceros to make 3D model, which we spent three weeks to watch videos (RHINO TUTORIALS) and practice and I thought improve lot about this software and 3D printing.

Final Exhibition

Our studio is Global Challenge, which is large field so at the beginning we have no idea what we want to do. In first two weeks, I decided to do obesity with Alan, and we did some research about human overweight but we still not sure what should we do exactly. After Yu had joined our team, we changed the topic to air pollution because we have the same background which is the worse environment of air. The air pollution is the principal issue in many countries, which is a huge challenge to deal with this puzzle in the world. For example, China and Saudi Arabia are high air pollution country, and many people have some lung problems such as asthma, pulmonary embolism, pneumonia, and pneumothorax, which can affect human's health. Therefore, we want to educate people vigilance about air pollution, which can be harmful to human. We considered some questions like that where is air pollution from (the cause of air pollution), which countries are more air pollution in the world and how harmful is air pollution include which part of human's body will be affected mostly (effect). We will follow those questions we did specific research.

'There are four main types of air pollution sources. One is Mobile sources such as cars, buses, planes, trucks, and trains. Two is Stationary sources such as power plants, oil refineries, industrial facilities, and factories. Three is Area sources such as agricultural areas, cities, and wood burning fireplaces. Four is Natural sources such as wind-blown dust, wildfires, and volcanoes'(National Park Service, 2017).  People have the ability to reduce to use their own car and use something can be recycled.

According to YAHOO FINANCE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Egypt, Bangladesh and Kuwait are the worst top five countries in the world. Developing countries are worse than developed (2016).

Interestingly, theguardian found that ‘people across the UK are underestimating the impact of the air pollution crisis in their local areas according to a new survey. Almost two-thirds of respondents said they were concerned about the issue of air pollution, but only one in 10 said they thought the air they breathe is bad’ (2016, March 9). For that reason, a lot of people do not know how harmful is air pollution, and we want to people know and motivate on air pollution. It might assist the environment to reduce air pollution because if people know the dangers, they might control the behavior.

The effect of air pollution, Air Quality Information for the Sacramento Region publish that the size of particles is directly linked to their potential for causing health problems. Small particles (known as PM2.5 or fine particulate matter) pose the greatest problems because they bypass the body’s natural defenses and can get deep into your lungs and potentially your bloodstream. Exposure to such particles can affect both your lungs and your heart (2017). Link to that we thought to use lung's shape and heart's beat which is an ideal approach to demonstrate our topic.

Based on these researches and the issues around it, our group will be creating a particular artifact that can help raise more awareness and educate people from all over the world about the impact/effects of air pollution.
